Barco projectors enliven Bridgestone Super Bowl halftime show

Visualization pioneer Barco was selected by the team of DWP Live and LMG, Inc. to provide its best-in-class FLM HD20 large venue projectors to create a dynamic visual showcase highlighting Madonna's performance. The Super Bowl halftime show consistently tops the list of the most anticipated annual live, televised events. This year, more than 114 million viewers watched the multimedia-enhanced musical spectacular featuring pop artist Madonna. Bruce Rodgers of Tribe, the halftime show set designer, engaged LMG, Inc., a national provider of video, audio, and lighting technology, with some unique opportunities for the visual assault.

The 12-minute show turned the stage and a 149' x 80' field projection area into a dynamic, continuously transforming showcase of surreal video imagery. The large-scale projection mapping was created using 32 Barco FLM HD20 projectors, rigged into eight pods of four projectors each, to cover the enormous 11,000-square-foot surface area. The projectors were operated, converged and edge-blended using Barco's Projector Toolset to depict a wide range of imagery from “live” Vogue magazine covers, to glowing, animated geometrics to reverberating speakers. Content was created by Moment Factory from Montreal, Canada.

LMG partnered with live event production company, DWP Live, on projection for the halftime show. Both companies supplied 16 Barco HD20 projectors for the event, and DWP led the effort to accomplish the large-scale projection mapping of the field surface in front of the stage. “With Barco, we could rely on achieving the extreme brightness we needed to match the projection to the LED and spotlights for a seamless panorama of imagery,” commented Danny Whetstone, Founder of DWP Live and chief projectionist for the show. ”It was essential that we hang the projectors straight down, 151 feet in the air, lens to field, in order to fill the enormous visual area with the converged image. The HD20s performed beautifully in this unique quad-stack configuration. We have the know-how to push them to their limits, and they never let us down!”

Featuring brilliant color rendition and ultra-high resolution, Barco's FLM HD20 is a native HD 20,000 lumens three-chip DLP® projector designed for large venues. It is an ideal match for luminous environments, with its ability to deliver clear, crisp images with high contrast and stunning brightness. Extremely quiet, easy to use and maintain, the HD20 ensures consistently high image quality over a long time, thanks to fully sealed optics and extended lamp life.

“With the tremendous team and Barco's technologically excellent projectors, we knew we had a winning combination that we could rely on for this extremely high-profile event,” commented Les Goldberg, CEO and President of LMG. “This was a true testament to the value of bringing together the best minds and the best gear in the industry to support a spectacular show.”

Barco's FLM HD20 projectors are the proven workhorse and a leading choice for rental and staging companies, gracing the stages of the world's largest musical and theatrical acts in prestigious venues around the globe. Last year, Barco FLM HD20s supported international events including Roger Waters' The Wall, the Eurovision Song Contest, and the Bacardi Togetherness worldwide brand campaign.

“Wherever there's a high-profile event, you can be sure that Barco is there,” commented Todd Hoddick, VP Entertainment for Barco North America. “We've been honored to participate in some of the world's most visually groundbreaking concerts and shows, and this latest endeavor with DWP Live and LMG is the pinnacle. We are proud to offer our dependable, high-performance projectors and show control systems which are optimized for high performance to help producers realize the depths of their imaginations.”
