The Association of Lighting Designers has reported that one of its long standing members, Philip L Edwards died last weekend. As ALD member #68, he has been a member since its inception and has always kept in touch through the pages of Focus, AGMs or Member Meetings across the country. He also ensured that the ABTT North kept contact with the ALD, opening up their meetings that would be of interest to ALD members. His last Focus article will appear in the June/July 2013 issue.
The news was received just as Focus went to press, so a full obituary will appear in the August/September issue. However his long term employers at the Royal Northern College of Music posted the following on their website earlier this week:
“Philip was RNCM lighting manager and lighting designer for numerous opera and performance projects at the College and on tour, from Purgatory and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1973 to, most recently, Kiss Me Kate in April of this year: 40 years of dedicated service to the students of the RNCM.
“Phil was a consummate professional and committed educationalist. He was presented an Honorary Membership of the RNCM in December 2002, well deserved in recognition of his distinguished service to the College.
“Phil will always be respected and remain in the minds and thoughts of all that met and worked with him. He leaves a dedicated wife Christine and two sons, Glyn and Gareth.”
